Psalm 49

1 Hear this, all peoples!     Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, 2 both low and high,     rich and poor together! 3 My mouth shall speak wisdom;     the meditation of my heart shall be understanding. 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb;     I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre. 5 Why should I fear in times of trouble,     when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, 6 those who trust in their wealth     and boast of the abundance of their riches? 7 Truly no man can ransom another,     or give to God the price of his life, 8 for the ransom of their life is costly     and can never suffice, 9 that he should live on forever     and never see the pit. 10 For he sees that even the wise die;     the fool and the stupid alike must perish     and leave their wealth to others. 11 Their graves are their homes forever,     their dwelling places to all generations,     though they called lands by their own names. 12 Man in his pomp will not remain;     he is like the beasts that perish. 13 This is the path of those who have foolish confidence;     yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah 14 Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;     death shall be their shepherd,     and the upright shall rule over them in the morning.     Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell. 15 But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol,     for he will receive me. Selah 16 Be not afraid when a man becomes rich,     when the glory of his house increases. 17 For when he dies he will carry nothing away;     his glory will not go down after him. 18 For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed     —and though you get praise when you do well for yourself— 19 his soul will go to the generation of his fathers,     who will never again see light. 20 Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

Psalm 53

1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”     They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity;     there is none who does good. 2 God looks down from heaven     on the children of man     to see if there are any who understand,     who seek after God. 3 They have all fallen away;     together they have become corrupt;     there is none who does good,     not even one. 4 Have those who work evil no knowledge,     who eat up my people as they eat bread,     and do not call upon God? 5 There they are, in great terror,     where there is no terror!     For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you;     you put them to shame, for God has rejected them. 6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!     When God restores the fortunes of his people,     let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Psalm 119:49-72

49 Remember your word to your servant,     in which you have made me hope. 50 This is my comfort in my affliction,     that your promise gives me life. 51 The insolent utterly deride me,     but I do not turn away from your law. 52 When I think of your rules from of old,     I take comfort, O Lord. 53 Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,     who forsake your law. 54 Your statutes have been my songs     in the house of my sojourning. 55 I remember your name in the night, O Lord,     and keep your law. 56 This blessing has fallen to me,     that I have kept your precepts. 57 The Lord is my portion;     I promise to keep your words. 58 I entreat your favor with all my heart;     be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 When I think on my ways,     I turn my feet to your testimonies; 60 I hasten and do not delay     to keep your commandments. 61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,     I do not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to praise you,     because of your righteous rules. 63 I am a companion of all who fear you,     of those who keep your precepts. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;     teach me your statutes! 65 You have dealt well with your servant,     Lord, according to your word. 66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge,     for I believe in your commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,     but now I keep your word. 68 You are good and do good;     teach me your statutes. 69 The insolent smear me with lies,     but with my whole heart I keep your precepts; 70 their heart is unfeeling like fat,     but I delight in your law. 71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,     that I might learn your statutes. 72 The law of your mouth is better to me     than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Isaiah 9:8-17

8 The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,     and it will fall on Israel; 9 and all the people will know,     Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,     who say in pride and in arrogance of heart: 10 “The bricks have fallen,     but we will build with dressed stones;     the sycamores have been cut down,     but we will put cedars in their place.” 11 But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him,     and stirs up his enemies. 12 The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west     devour Israel with open mouth.     For all this his anger has not turned away,     and his hand is stretched out still. 13 The people did not turn to him who struck them,     nor inquire of the Lord of hosts. 14 So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail,     palm branch and reed in one day— 15 the elder and honored man is the head,     and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail; 16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,     and those who are guided by them are swallowed up. 17 Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men,     and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows;     for everyone is godless and an evildoer,     and every mouth speaks folly.     For all this his anger has not turned away,     and his hand is stretched out still.

2 Peter 2:1-10a

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

Mark 1:1-8

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,     “Behold, I send my messenger before your face,     who will prepare your way, 3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:     ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,     make his paths straight,’” 4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
