Today's readings include passages from Psalms, Jeremiah, Philippians and John.

Psalm 55

1 Give ear to my prayer, O God,     and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! 2 Attend to me, and answer me;     I am restless in my complaint and I moan, 3 because of the noise of the enemy,     because of the oppression of the wicked.     For they drop trouble upon me,     and in anger they bear a grudge against me. 4 My heart is in anguish within me;     the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 5 Fear and trembling come upon me,     and horror overwhelms me. 6 And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!     I would fly away and be at rest; 7 yes, I would wander far away;     I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah 8 I would hurry to find a shelter     from the raging wind and tempest.” 9 Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues;     for I see violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they go around it     on its walls,     and iniquity and trouble are within it; 11 ruin is in its midst;     oppression and fraud     do not depart from its marketplace. 12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—     then I could bear it;     it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me—     then I could hide from him. 13 But it is you, a man, my equal,     my companion, my familiar friend. 14 We used to take sweet counsel together;     within God's house we walked in the throng. 15 Let death steal over them;     let them go down to Sheol alive;     for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. 16 But I call to God,     and the Lord will save me. 17 Evening and morning and at noon     I utter my complaint and moan,     and he hears my voice. 18 He redeems my soul in safety     from the battle that I wage,     for many are arrayed against me. 19 God will give ear and humble them,     he who is enthroned from of old, Selah     because they do not change     and do not fear God. 20 My companion stretched out his hand against his friends;     he violated his covenant. 21 His speech was smooth as butter,     yet war was in his heart;     his words were softer than oil,     yet they were drawn swords. 22 Cast your burden on the Lord,     and he will sustain you;     he will never permit     the righteous to be moved. 23 But you, O God, will cast them down     into the pit of destruction;     men of blood and treachery     shall not live out half their days.     But I will trust in you.

Psalm 74

1 O God, why do you cast us off forever?     Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? 2 Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old,     which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage!     Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. 3 Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;     the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary! 4 Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place;     they set up their own signs for signs. 5 They were like those who swing axes     in a forest of trees. 6 And all its carved wood     they broke down with hatchets and hammers. 7 They set your sanctuary on fire;     they profaned the dwelling place of your name,     bringing it down to the ground. 8 They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”;     they burned all the meeting places of God in the land. 9 We do not see our signs;     there is no longer any prophet,     and there is none among us who knows how long. 10 How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?     Is the enemy to revile your name forever? 11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?     Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them! 12 Yet God my King is from of old,     working salvation in the midst of the earth. 13 You divided the sea by your might;     you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. 14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;     you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. 15 You split open springs and brooks;     you dried up ever-flowing streams. 16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;     you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. 17 You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth;     you have made summer and winter. 18 Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs,     and a foolish people reviles your name. 19 Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts;     do not forget the life of your poor forever. 20 Have regard for the covenant,     for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. 21 Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame;     let the poor and needy praise your name. 22 Arise, O God, defend your cause;     remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day! 23 Do not forget the clamor of your foes,     the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!

Jeremiah 17:5-10, 14-17

5 Thus says the Lord:     “Cursed is the man who trusts in man     and makes flesh his strength,     whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert,     and shall not see any good come.     He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,     in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,     whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water,     that sends out its roots by the stream,     and does not fear when heat comes,     for its leaves remain green,     and is not anxious in the year of drought,     for it does not cease to bear fruit.” 9 The heart is deceitful above all things,     and desperately sick;     who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart     and test the mind,     to give every man according to his ways,     according to the fruit of his deeds.” ... 14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;     save me, and I shall be saved,     for you are my praise. 15 Behold, they say to me,     “Where is the word of the Lord?     Let it come!” 16 I have not run away from being your shepherd,     nor have I desired the day of sickness.     You know what came out of my lips;     it was before your face. 17 Be not a terror to me;     you are my refuge in the day of disaster.

Philippians 4:1-13

1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. 2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. 10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

John 12:27-36

27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
