Tuesday, September 19

Today's readings include passages from Psalms, 1 Kings, 1 Corinthians and Matthew.

Psalm 61

1 Hear my cry, O God,     listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you     when my heart is faint.     Lead me to the rock     that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge,     a strong tower against the enemy. Let me dwell in your tent forever!     Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah For you, O God, have heard my vows;     you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. Prolong the life of the king;     may his years endure to all generations! May he be enthroned forever before God;     appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! So will I ever sing praises to your name,     as I perform my vows day after day.

Psalm 62

1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;     from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation,     my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. How long will all of you attack a man     to batter him,     like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.     They take pleasure in falsehood.     They bless with their mouths,     but inwardly they curse. Selah For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,     for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation,     my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory;     my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people;     pour out your heart before him;     God is a refuge for us. Selah Those of low estate are but a breath;     those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up;     they are together lighter than a breath. 10 Put no trust in extortion;     set no vain hopes on robbery;     if riches increase, set not your heart on them. 11 Once God has spoken;     twice have I heard this:     that power belongs to God, 12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.     For you will render to a man     according to his work.

Psalm 68

1 God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered;     and those who hate him shall flee before him! As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away;     as wax melts before fire,     so the wicked shall perish before God! But the righteous shall be glad;     they shall exult before God;     they shall be jubilant with joy! Sing to God, sing praises to his name;     lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts;     his name is the Lord;     exult before him! Father of the fatherless and protector of widows     is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home;     he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,     but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. O God, when you went out before your people,     when you marched through the wilderness, Selah the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain,     before God, the One of Sinai,     before God, the God of Israel. Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad;     you restored your inheritance as it languished; 10 your flock found a dwelling in it;     in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. 11 The Lord gives the word;     the women who announce the news are a great host: 12 “The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!”     The women at home divide the spoil— 13 though you men lie among the sheepfolds—     the wings of a dove covered with silver,     its pinions with shimmering gold. 14 When the Almighty scatters kings there,     let snow fall on Zalmon. 15 O mountain of God, mountain of Bashan;     O many-peaked mountain, mountain of Bashan! 16 Why do you look with hatred, O many-peaked mountain,     at the mount that God desired for his abode,     yes, where the Lord will dwell forever? 17 The chariots of God are twice ten thousand,     thousands upon thousands;     the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. 18 You ascended on high,     leading a host of captives in your train     and receiving gifts among men,     even among the rebellious, that the Lord God may dwell there. 19 Blessed be the Lord,     who daily bears us up;     God is our salvation. Selah 20 Our God is a God of salvation,     and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. 21 But God will strike the heads of his enemies,     the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. 22 The Lord said,     “I will bring them back from Bashan,     I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, 23 that you may strike your feet in their blood,     that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.” 24 Your procession is seen, O God,     the procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary— 25 the singers in front, the musicians last,     between them virgins playing tambourines: 26 “Bless God in the great congregation,     the Lord, O you who are of Israel's fountain!” 27 There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead,     the princes of Judah in their throng,     the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. 28 Summon your power, O God,     the power, O God, by which you have worked for us. 29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem     kings shall bear gifts to you. 30 Rebuke the beasts that dwell among the reeds,     the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples.     Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute;     scatter the peoples who delight in war. 31 Nobles shall come from Egypt;     Cush shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God. 32 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God;     sing praises to the Lord, Selah 33 to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens;     behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. 34 Ascribe power to God,     whose majesty is over Israel,     and whose power is in the skies. 35 Awesome is God from his sanctuary;     the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people.     Blessed be God!

1 Kings 21:17-29

17 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18 “Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession. 19 And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’” 20 Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. 21 Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. 22 And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin. 23 And of Jezebel the Lordalso said, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the walls of Jezreel.’ 24 Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.” 25 (There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. 26 He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.) 27 And when Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his flesh and fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. 28 And the word of the Lordcame to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; but in his son's days I will bring the disaster upon his house.”

1 Corinthians 1:20-31

20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Matthew 4:12-17

12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,     the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people dwelling in darkness     have seen a great light,     and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,     on them a light has dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
