Daily scripture readings from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer

Tuesday, October 17

Today's readings include passages from Psalms, Jeremiah, 1 Corinthians and Matthew.

Psalm 5

1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;     consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry,     my King and my God,     for to you do I pray. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;     in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;     evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;     you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies;     the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,     will enter your house.     I will bow down toward your holy temple     in the fear of you. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness     because of my enemies;     make your way straight before me. For there is no truth in their mouth;     their inmost self is destruction;     their throat is an open grave;     they flatter with their tongue. 10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;     let them fall by their own counsels;     because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,     for they have rebelled against you. 11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;     let them ever sing for joy,     and spread your protection over them,     that those who love your name may exult in you. 12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;     you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 6

1 O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,     nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;     heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled.     But you, O Lord—how long? Turn, O Lord, deliver my life;     save me for the sake of your steadfast love. For in death there is no remembrance of you;     in Sheol who will give you praise? I am weary with my moaning;     every night I flood my bed with tears;     I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief;     it grows weak because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of evil,     for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea;     the Lord accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled;     they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.

Psalm 10

1 Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?     Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;     let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul,     and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him;     all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” His ways prosper at all times;     your judgments are on high, out of his sight;     as for all his foes, he puffs at them. He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved;     throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;     under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. He sits in ambush in the villages;     in hiding places he murders the innocent.     His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket;     he lurks that he may seize the poor;     he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. 10 The helpless are crushed, sink down,     and fall by his might. 11 He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,     he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” 12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;     forget not the afflicted. 13 Why does the wicked renounce God     and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? 14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,     that you may take it into your hands;     to you the helpless commits himself;     you have been the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;     call his wickedness to account till you find none. 16 The Lord is king forever and ever;     the nations perish from his land. 17 O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;     you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear 18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,     so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

Psalm 11

1 In the Lord I take refuge;     how can you say to my soul,     “Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the bow;     they have fitted their arrow to the string     to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed,     what can the righteous do?” The Lord is in his holy temple;     the Lord's throne is in heaven;     his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man. The Lord tests the righteous,     but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. Let him rain coals on the wicked;     fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. For the Lord is righteous;     he loves righteous deeds;     the upright shall behold his face.

Jeremiah 36:27-37:2

27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah's dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” 30 Therefore thus says the Lordconcerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’” 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. 37:1 Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.

1 Corinthians 14:1-12

1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

Matthew 10:16-23

v16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
