Psalm 50

1 The Mighty One, God the Lord,     speaks and summons the earth     from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,     God shines forth. 3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence;     before him is a devouring fire,     around him a mighty tempest. 4 He calls to the heavens above     and to the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 “Gather to me my faithful ones,     who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” 6 The heavens declare his righteousness,     for God himself is judge! Selah 7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak;     O Israel, I will testify against you.     I am God, your God. 8 Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;     your burnt offerings are continually before me. 9 I will not accept a bull from your house     or goats from your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is mine,     the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the hills,     and all that moves in the field is mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you,     for the world and its fullness are mine. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls     or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,     and perform your vows to the Most High, 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble;     I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” 16 But to the wicked God says:     “What right have you to recite my statutes     or take my covenant on your lips? 17 For you hate discipline,     and you cast my words behind you. 18 If you see a thief, you are pleased with him,     and you keep company with adulterers. 19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil,     and your tongue frames deceit. 20 You sit and speak against your brother;     you slander your own mother's son. 21 These things you have done, and I have been silent;     you thought that I was one like yourself.     But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. 22 “Mark this, then, you who forget God,     lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver! 23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;     to one who orders his way rightly     I will show the salvation of God!”

Psalm 59

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;     protect me from those who rise up against me; 2 deliver me from those who work evil,     and save me from bloodthirsty men. 3 For behold, they lie in wait for my life;     fierce men stir up strife against me.     For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord, 4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.     Awake, come to meet me, and see! 5 You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.     Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;     spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah 6 Each evening they come back,     howling like dogs     and prowling about the city. 7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths     with swords in their lips—     for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?” 8 But you, O Lord, laugh at them;     you hold all the nations in derision. 9 O my Strength, I will watch for you,     for you, O God, are my fortress. 10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me;     God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. 11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;     make them totter by your power and bring them down,     O Lord, our shield! 12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,     let them be trapped in their pride.     For the cursing and lies that they utter, 13 consume them in wrath;     consume them till they are no more,     that they may know that God rules over Jacob     to the ends of the earth. Selah 14 Each evening they come back,     howling like dogs     and prowling about the city. 15 They wander about for food     and growl if they do not get their fill. 16 But I will sing of your strength;     I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.     For you have been to me a fortress     and a refuge in the day of my distress. 17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,     for you, O God, are my fortress,     the God who shows me steadfast love.

Psalm 60

1 O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses;     you have been angry; oh, restore us. 2 You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;     repair its breaches, for it totters. 3 You have made your people see hard things;     you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger. 4 You have set up a banner for those who fear you,     that they may flee to it from the bow. Selah 5 That your beloved ones may be delivered,     give salvation by your right hand and answer us! 6 God has spoken in his holiness:     “With exultation I will divide up Shechem     and portion out the Vale of Succoth. 7 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;     Ephraim is my helmet;     Judah is my scepter. 8 Moab is my washbasin;     upon Edom I cast my shoe;     over Philistia I shout in triumph.” 9 Who will bring me to the fortified city?     Who will lead me to Edom? 10 Have you not rejected us, O God?     You do not go forth, O God, with our armies. 11 Oh, grant us help against the foe,     for vain is the salvation of man! 12 With God we shall do valiantly;     it is he who will tread down our foes.

Psalm 118

1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let Israel say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the Lord say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord;     the Lord answered me and set me free. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.     What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is on my side as my helper;     I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord     than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord     than to trust in princes. 10 All nations surrounded me;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 12 They surrounded me like bees;     they went out like a fire among thorns;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 13 I was pushed hard, so that I was falling,     but the Lord helped me. 14 The Lord is my strength and my song;     he has become my salvation. 15 Glad songs of salvation     are in the tents of the righteous:     “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, 16 the right hand of the Lord exalts,     the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!” 17 I shall not die, but I shall live,     and recount the deeds of the Lord. 18 The Lord has disciplined me severely,     but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,     that I may enter through them     and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord;     the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I thank you that you have answered me     and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord's doing;     it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made;     let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!     Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!     We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God,     and he has made his light to shine upon us.     Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,     up to the horns of the altar! 28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;     you are my God; I will extol you. 29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever!

Isaiah 49:13-23

13 Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;     break forth, O mountains, into singing!     For the Lord has comforted his people     and will have compassion on his afflicted. 14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me;     my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child,     that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?     Even these may forget,     yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;     your walls are continually before me. 17 Your builders make haste;     your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you. 18 Lift up your eyes around and see;     they all gather, they come to you.     As I live, declares the Lord,     you shall put them all on as an ornament;     you shall bind them on as a bride does. 19 “Surely your waste and your desolate places     and your devastated land—     surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants,     and those who swallowed you up will be far away. 20 The children of your bereavement     will yet say in your ears:     ‘The place is too narrow for me;     make room for me to dwell in.’ 21 Then you will say in your heart:     ‘Who has borne me these?     I was bereaved and barren,     exiled and put away,     but who has brought up these?     Behold, I was left alone;     from where have these come?’” 22 Thus says the Lord God:     “Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations,     and raise my signal to the peoples;     and they shall bring your sons in their arms,     and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. 23 Kings shall be your foster fathers,     and their queens your nursing mothers.     With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,     and lick the dust of your feet.     Then you will know that I am the Lord;     those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.”

Galatians 3:1-14

1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. 10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Mark 6:30-43

30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. 35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.
