Psalm 55

1 Give ear to my prayer, O God,     and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! 2 Attend to me, and answer me;     I am restless in my complaint and I moan, 3 because of the noise of the enemy,     because of the oppression of the wicked.     For they drop trouble upon me,     and in anger they bear a grudge against me. 4 My heart is in anguish within me;     the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 5 Fear and trembling come upon me,     and horror overwhelms me. 6 And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!     I would fly away and be at rest; 7 yes, I would wander far away;     I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah 8 I would hurry to find a shelter     from the raging wind and tempest.” 9 Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues;     for I see violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they go around it     on its walls,     and iniquity and trouble are within it; 11 ruin is in its midst;     oppression and fraud     do not depart from its marketplace. 12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—     then I could bear it;     it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me—     then I could hide from him. 13 But it is you, a man, my equal,     my companion, my familiar friend. 14 We used to take sweet counsel together;     within God's house we walked in the throng. 15 Let death steal over them;     let them go down to Sheol alive;     for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. 16 But I call to God,     and the Lord will save me. 17 Evening and morning and at noon     I utter my complaint and moan,     and he hears my voice. 18 He redeems my soul in safety     from the battle that I wage,     for many are arrayed against me. 19 God will give ear and humble them,     he who is enthroned from of old, Selah     because they do not change     and do not fear God. 20 My companion stretched out his hand against his friends;     he violated his covenant. 21 His speech was smooth as butter,     yet war was in his heart;     his words were softer than oil,     yet they were drawn swords. 22 Cast your burden on the Lord,     and he will sustain you;     he will never permit     the righteous to be moved. 23 But you, O God, will cast them down     into the pit of destruction;     men of blood and treachery     shall not live out half their days.     But I will trust in you.

Psalm 138

1 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;     before the gods I sing your praise; 2 I bow down toward your holy temple     and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,     for you have exalted above all things     your name and your word. 3 On the day I called, you answered me;     my strength of soul you increased. 4 All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,     for they have heard the words of your mouth, 5 and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,     for great is the glory of the Lord. 6 For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,     but the haughty he knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,     you preserve my life;     you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,     and your right hand delivers me. 8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;     your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.     Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Psalm 139

1 Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;     you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down     and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue,     behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before,     and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;     it is high; I cannot attain it. 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?     Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!     If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning     and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me,     and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,     and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to you;     the night is bright as the day,     for darkness is as light with you. 13 For you formed my inward parts;     you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.     Wonderful are your works;     my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you,     when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;     in your book were written, every one of them,     the days that were formed for me,     when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!     How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.     I awake, and I am still with you. 19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God!     O men of blood, depart from me! 20 They speak against you with malicious intent;     your enemies take your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?     And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 22 I hate them with complete hatred;     I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!     Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,     and lead me in the way everlasting!

Joshua 23

1 A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, 2 Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years. 3 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. 4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. 5 The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you. 6 Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, 7 that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, 8 but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day. 9 For the Lord has driven out before you great and strong nations. And as for you, no man has been able to stand before you to this day. 10 One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, just as he promised you. 11 Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God. 12 For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, 13 know for certain that the Lordyour God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you. 14 “And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed. 15 But just as all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that the Lord your God has given you, 16 if you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you.”

Romans 15:25-33

25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. 26 For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. 27 For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. 28 When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. 29 I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. 30 I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, 31 that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. 33 May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Matthew 27:11-23

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. 15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
