Psalm 30

1 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up     and have not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 Lord my God, I cried to you for help,     and you have healed me. 3 Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;     you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. 4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,     and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For his anger is but for a moment,     and his favor is for a lifetime.     Weeping may tarry for the night,     but joy comes with the morning. 6 As for me, I said in my prosperity,     “I shall never be moved.” 7 By your favor, O Lord,     you made my mountain stand strong;     you hid your face;     I was dismayed. 8 To you, O Lord, I cry,     and to the Lord I plead for mercy: 9 “What profit is there in my death,     if I go down to the pit?     Will the dust praise you?     Will it tell of your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!     Lord, be my helper!” 11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;     you have loosed my sackcloth     and clothed me with gladness, 12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.     Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Psalm 32

1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,     whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,     and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away     through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;     my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to you,     and I did not cover my iniquity;     I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”     and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah 6 Therefore let everyone who is godly     offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;     surely in the rush of great waters,     they shall not reach him. 7 You are a hiding place for me;     you preserve me from trouble;     you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;     I will counsel you with my eye upon you. 9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,     which must be curbed with bit and bridle,     or it will not stay near you. 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,     but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. 11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,     and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Psalm 42

1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,     so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God,     for the living God.     When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food     day and night,     while they say to me all the day long,     “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember,     as I pour out my soul:     how I would go with the throng     and lead them in procession to the house of God     with glad shouts and songs of praise,     a multitude keeping festival. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation 6 and my God.     My soul is cast down within me;     therefore I remember you     from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,     from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep     at the roar of your waterfalls;     all your breakers and your waves     have gone over me. 8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,     and at night his song is with me,     a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God, my rock:     “Why have you forgotten me?     Why do I go mourning     because of the oppression of the enemy?” 10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,     my adversaries taunt me,     while they say to me all the day long,     “Where is your God?” 11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation and my God.

Psalm 43

1 Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause     against an ungodly people,     from the deceitful and unjust man     deliver me! 2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge;     why have you rejected me?     Why do I go about mourning     because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 Send out your light and your truth;     let them lead me;     let them bring me to your holy hill     and to your dwelling! 4 Then I will go to the altar of God,     to God my exceeding joy,     and I will praise you with the lyre,     O God, my God. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation and my God.

Isaiah 46

1 Bel bows down; Nebo stoops;     their idols are on beasts and livestock;     these things you carry are borne     as burdens on weary beasts. 2 They stoop; they bow down together;     they cannot save the burden,     but themselves go into captivity. 3 “Listen to me, O house of Jacob,     all the remnant of the house of Israel,     who have been borne by me from before your birth,     carried from the womb; 4 even to your old age I am he,     and to gray hairs I will carry you.     I have made, and I will bear;     I will carry and will save. 5 “To whom will you liken me and make me equal,     and compare me, that we may be alike? 6 Those who lavish gold from the purse,     and weigh out silver in the scales,     hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;     then they fall down and worship! 7 They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,     they set it in its place, and it stands there;     it cannot move from its place.     If one cries to it, it does not answer     or save him from his trouble. 8 “Remember this and stand firm,     recall it to mind, you transgressors, 9 remember the former things of old;     for I am God, and there is no other;     I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning     and from ancient times things not yet done,     saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,     and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ 11 calling a bird of prey from the east,     the man of my counsel from a far country.     I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;     I have purposed, and I will do it. 12 “Listen to me, you stubborn of heart,     you who are far from righteousness: 13 I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off,     and my salvation will not delay;     I will put salvation in Zion,     for Israel my glory.”

Ephesians 6:10-24

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. 21 So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. 22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts. 23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.

Mark 5:1-20

1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessedman, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
