Psalm 51

1 Have mercy on me, O God,     according to your steadfast love;     according to your abundant mercy     blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,     and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions,     and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned     and done what is evil in your sight,     so that you may be justified in your words     and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,     and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,     and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;     wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness;     let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins,     and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,     and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence,     and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,     and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,     and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,     O God of my salvation,     and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips,     and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;     you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;     a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;     build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 then will you delight in right sacrifices,     in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;     then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Psalm 69:1-23

1 Save me, O God!     For the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire,     where there is no foothold;     I have come into deep waters,     and the flood sweeps over me. 3 I am weary with my crying out;     my throat is parched.     My eyes grow dim     with waiting for my God. 4 More in number than the hairs of my head     are those who hate me without cause;     mighty are those who would destroy me,     those who attack me with lies.     What I did not steal     must I now restore? 5 O God, you know my folly;     the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. 6 Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me,     O Lord God of hosts;     let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,     O God of Israel. 7 For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach,     that dishonor has covered my face. 8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,     an alien to my mother's sons. 9 For zeal for your house has consumed me,     and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. 10 When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting,     it became my reproach. 11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,     I became a byword to them. 12 I am the talk of those who sit in the gate,     and the drunkards make songs about me. 13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.     At an acceptable time, O God,     in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. 14 Deliver me     from sinking in the mire;     let me be delivered from my enemies     and from the deep waters. 15 Let not the flood sweep over me,     or the deep swallow me up,     or the pit close its mouth over me. 16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;     according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. 17 Hide not your face from your servant,     for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. 18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me;     ransom me because of my enemies! 19 You know my reproach,     and my shame and my dishonor;     my foes are all known to you. 20 Reproaches have broken my heart,     so that I am in despair.     I looked for pity, but there was none,     and for comforters, but I found none. 21 They gave me poison for food,     and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. 22 Let their own table before them become a snare;     and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,     and make their loins tremble continually.

Jeremiah 12:1-16

1 Righteous are you, O Lord,     when I complain to you;     yet I would plead my case before you.     Why does the way of the wicked prosper?     Why do all who are treacherous thrive? 2 You plant them, and they take root;     they grow and produce fruit;     you are near in their mouth     and far from their heart. 3 But you, O Lord, know me;     you see me, and test my heart toward you.     Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,     and set them apart for the day of slaughter. 4 How long will the land mourn     and the grass of every field wither?     For the evil of those who dwell in it     the beasts and the birds are swept away,     because they said, “He will not see our latter end.” 5 “If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you,     how will you compete with horses?     And if in a safe land you are so trusting,     what will you do in the thicket of the Jordan? 6 For even your brothers and the house of your father,     even they have dealt treacherously with you;     they are in full cry after you;     do not believe them,     though they speak friendly words to you.” 7 “I have forsaken my house;     I have abandoned my heritage;     I have given the beloved of my soul     into the hands of her enemies. 8 My heritage has become to me     like a lion in the forest;     she has lifted up her voice against me;     therefore I hate her. 9 Is my heritage to me like a hyena's lair?     Are the birds of prey against her all around?     Go, assemble all the wild beasts;     bring them to devour. 10 Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;     they have trampled down my portion;     they have made my pleasant portion     a desolate wilderness. 11 They have made it a desolation;     desolate, it mourns to me.     The whole land is made desolate,     but no man lays it to heart. 12 Upon all the bare heights in the desert     destroyers have come,     for the sword of the Lord devours     from one end of the land to the other;     no flesh has peace. 13 They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns;     they have tired themselves out but profit nothing.     They shall be ashamed of their harvests     because of the fierce anger of the Lord.” 14 Thus says the Lord concerning all my evil neighbors who touch the heritage that I have given my people Israel to inherit: “Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them. 15 And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, ‘As the Lord lives,’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they shall be built up in the midst of my people.

Philippians 3:1-14

1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. 2 Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

John 12:9-19

9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. 12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;     behold, your king is coming,     sitting on a donkey's colt!” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
