Psalm 19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,     and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech,     and night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words,     whose voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,     and their words to the end of the world.     In them he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,     and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,     and its circuit to the end of them,     and there is nothing hidden from its heat. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect,     reviving the soul;     the testimony of the Lord is sure,     making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right,     rejoicing the heart;     the commandment of the Lord is pure,     enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean,     enduring forever;     the rules of the Lord are true,     and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold,     even much fine gold;     sweeter also than honey     and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;     in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors?     Declare me innocent from hidden faults. 13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;     let them not have dominion over me!     Then I shall be blameless,     and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart     be acceptable in your sight,     Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,     a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,     though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam,     though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,     the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;     God will help her when morning dawns. 6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;     he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us;     the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,     how he has brought desolations on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;     he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;     he burns the chariots with fire. 10 “Be still, and know that I am God.     I will be exalted among the nations,     I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us;     the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Psalm 66

1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth; 2 sing the glory of his name;     give to him glorious praise! 3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!     So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. 4 All the earth worships you     and sings praises to you;     they sing praises to your name.” Selah 5 Come and see what God has done:     he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. 6 He turned the sea into dry land;     they passed through the river on foot.     There did we rejoice in him, 7 who rules by his might forever,     whose eyes keep watch on the nations—     let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah 8 Bless our God, O peoples;     let the sound of his praise be heard, 9 who has kept our soul among the living     and has not let our feet slip. 10 For you, O God, have tested us;     you have tried us as silver is tried. 11 You brought us into the net;     you laid a crushing burden on our backs; 12 you let men ride over our heads;     we went through fire and through water;     yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance. 13 I will come into your house with burnt offerings;     I will perform my vows to you, 14 that which my lips uttered     and my mouth promised when I was in trouble. 15 I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals,     with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;     I will make an offering of bulls and goats. Selah 16 Come and hear, all you who fear God,     and I will tell what he has done for my soul. 17 I cried to him with my mouth,     and high praise was on my tongue. 18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,     the Lord would not have listened. 19 But truly God has listened;     he has attended to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God,     because he has not rejected my prayer     or removed his steadfast love from me!

Psalm 67

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us     and make his face to shine upon us, Selah 2 that your way may be known on earth,     your saving power among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;     let all the peoples praise you! 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,     for you judge the peoples with equity     and guide the nations upon earth. Selah 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;     let all the peoples praise you! 6 The earth has yielded its increase;     God, our God, shall bless us. 7 God shall bless us;     let all the ends of the earth fear him!

2 Samuel 13:1-22

1 Now Absalom, David's son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David's son, loved her. 2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. 4 And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.” 5 Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’” 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” 7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.” 12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. 13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” 14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her. 15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!” 16 But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her. 17 He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.” 18 Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. 20 And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom's house. 21 When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. 22 But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar.

Romans 15:1-13

1 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,     “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,     and sing to your name.” 10 And again it is said,     “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” 11 And again,     “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,     and let all the peoples extol him.” 12 And again Isaiah says,     “The root of Jesse will come,     even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;     in him will the Gentiles hope.” 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

John 3:22-26

22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison). 25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”
