Today's readings include passages from Psalms, Joshua, Romans and Matthew.

Psalm 30

1 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up     and have not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 Lord my God, I cried to you for help,     and you have healed me. 3 Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;     you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. 4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,     and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For his anger is but for a moment,     and his favor is for a lifetime.     Weeping may tarry for the night,     but joy comes with the morning. 6 As for me, I said in my prosperity,     “I shall never be moved.” 7 By your favor, O Lord,     you made my mountain stand strong;     you hid your face;     I was dismayed. 8 To you, O Lord, I cry,     and to the Lord I plead for mercy: 9 “What profit is there in my death,     if I go down to the pit?     Will the dust praise you?     Will it tell of your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!     Lord, be my helper!” 11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;     you have loosed my sackcloth     and clothed me with gladness, 12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.     Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Psalm 32

1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,     whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,     and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away     through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;     my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to you,     and I did not cover my iniquity;     I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”     and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah 6 Therefore let everyone who is godly     offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;     surely in the rush of great waters,     they shall not reach him. 7 You are a hiding place for me;     you preserve me from trouble;     you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;     I will counsel you with my eye upon you. 9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,     which must be curbed with bit and bridle,     or it will not stay near you. 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,     but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. 11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,     and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Psalm 42

1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,     so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God,     for the living God.     When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food     day and night,     while they say to me all the day long,     “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember,     as I pour out my soul:     how I would go with the throng     and lead them in procession to the house of God     with glad shouts and songs of praise,     a multitude keeping festival. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation 6 and my God.     My soul is cast down within me;     therefore I remember you     from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,     from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep     at the roar of your waterfalls;     all your breakers and your waves     have gone over me. 8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,     and at night his song is with me,     a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God, my rock:     “Why have you forgotten me?     Why do I go mourning     because of the oppression of the enemy?” 10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,     my adversaries taunt me,     while they say to me all the day long,     “Where is your God?” 11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation and my God.

Psalm 43

1 Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause     against an ungodly people,     from the deceitful and unjust man     deliver me! 2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge;     why have you rejected me?     Why do I go about mourning     because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 Send out your light and your truth;     let them lead me;     let them bring me to your holy hill     and to your dwelling! 4 Then I will go to the altar of God,     to God my exceeding joy,     and I will praise you with the lyre,     O God, my God. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me?     Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation and my God.

Joshua 6:1-14

1 Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. 3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” 6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.” 7 And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.” 8 And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. 9 The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11 So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going about it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. 12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rear guard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually. 14 And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.

Romans 13:1-7

1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Matthew 26:26-35

26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.” 30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
